Constructed from concrete precast panels, the Karratha St John Ambulance Substation was built to withstand the harsh Pilbara climate with durability and energy efficiency in mind.

The two-storey facility design allows for the organisation to operate their different entities within the same building while remaining separate. The ground floor is dedicated to the St John Ambulances Services Employees and consists of the drive through ambulance garage which houses 4 vehicles, managers office, secure medical store, male and female ablutions. Additional facilities include a lounge area, secure parking and quiet rooms for the staff to use during shift work.

The first floor is devoted to public services and comprises of two training rooms with an operable wall between them allowing the two areas to conjoin for larger groups. Training groups are catered for with access to a kitchenette, meals area, ablutions and balcony all located on the same floor. St John administration staff are also based on the first floor with a reception area and offices.
